Grinding the process of machining parts by abrasion

The process of grinding is carried out in a machine called grinding machine.

This performs machining of pieces by abrasion, removing material from a piece in order to shape and model it. To do this, use abrasive tools called wheels. Grinding is usually a process of finishing parts, being used in the final manufacturing stage, after turning or milling, to improve the dimensional tolerance and the surface finish of the product.

Grinding is a machining operation performed on parts that demand demanding measures and tolerances, whether geometric, dimensional or surface finish.

The grinding machines for metal parts consist of a frame containing a rotating wheel composed of abrasive grains that are very hard and resistant to wear and tear, each abrasive grain is responsible for tearing a small amount of piece material, similar to what a cutting edge does in a milling machine.

The type of grinding wheel material is selected based on the ground material. The most conventional are:

  • Aluminum oxide (Al2O3), for steel grinding.

  • Silicon carbide (SiC), also called carborundum, for the grinding of non-ferrous metals, ceramics, foundries, etc.

And super abrasive:

  • Cubic boron nitride (CBN), for high speed grinding of high hardness ferrous, thermo-resistant alloys, cutting tools.

  • Diamond, for high speed and precision grinding of ceramics and hard metal. Depending on the characteristics of the pieces to be rectified, different types of grinders are used.

There is a wide range of grinding machines in the market. The more distinguished are:

  • Gliders or tangential.

  • Cylindrical of exterior, interior and centerless.

  • Universal.

  • Especiales.
